Palin Leads 2012 GOP Field in New Poll; Romney Leads in Average of 2012 Polls

A new Public Policy Polling poll on the 2012 GOP Presidential Nomination has Sarah Palin in the lead by two points over Newt Gingrich, with Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee not far behind.

This is now the second poll in the last month showing Palin the leader among possible GOP candidates for 2012. However, Mitt Romney has led the field in four polls released during the past month.

We have begun posting an average for candidates from the seven polls released in the past month. The average is not a true head-to-head average since not all the polls survey for the same field of possible candidates. So we have simply averaged the total for each candidate in the polls where they are included. Eventually, once the GOP field is set, the average will be based on the most recent 40 days of polls that include all the same candidates.

At this point, here is how the top five rank in the average:

18.9% Mitt Romney

17.5% Mike Huckabee

16.6% Sarah Palin

13.7% Newt Gingrich

5.7% Ron Paul
