Politico — “SNL” head writer Seth Meyers spared no one in his star turn at the White House Correspondents Dinner, pivoting from jokes about the oddball crop of 2012 presidential contenders to members of Congress to President Barack Obama. He mocked the White House Correspondents Association itself, C-SPAN, the venue for the evening (the Washington Hilton) and the city of D.C.
Some of his best – and meanest – jokes:
“CSPAN is of course the official network for wide shots of empty chairs. … CSPAN is one unpaid electric bill away from being a radio station.”
…
“Donald Trump has said he’s running for president as a Republican — which is surprising because I thought he was running as a joke. “
“Donald Trump owns the Miss USA pageant, which is great for Republicans because it will streamline their search for a vice president.” (Read More)
Here is partial video from tonight’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner – which could have been better called the “Bash and Mock Donald Trump Dinner.”
In this clip, President Obama mocks Donald Trump – who was present in the room with his wife. Obama said now that his Birth Certificate has been put to rest, Trump can “move on to more important matters” – like whether the “moon landing was faked,” or “Roswell.” He also mocked Trump’s “credentials and breadth of experience.” Obama proceeded to recap a recent episode of “Celebrity Apprentice,” as if that’s all that Trump has ever done.
Throughout, Trump sat at his table as everyone howled with laughter around him – not laughing with him, as these dinners are typically about – but clearly, at him.
Here is a video report on the news that Libyan Dictator Moammar Gadhafi’s son – Saif al Arab Gadhafi – has been killed in a NATO airstrike on the family compound in Tripoli. Three of Gadhafi’s grandsons were also reportedly killed in the strike. The report says there has been no independent confirmation of the deaths.
Here is video of Donald Trump and his wife Melania arriving at the Washington Hilton tonight to attend the White House Correspondents Dinner. As he walked into the hotel, you can hear he was booed by the reporters and cameramen nearby. Politico reports it was because he did not stop for interviews. They say Trump later returned to the group of reporters and did some interviews.
We have added a number of new polls on the 2012 Presidential race. Check the table below for all the polls added in the last several weeks.
Gov. Mitt Romney is leading the GOP Field in two of the key early states – New Hampshire and Nevada.
Interestingly, Romney also is leading Obama in both Nevada and New Hampshire. That could be huge if he turned out to be the GOP Nominee because Nevada and New Hampshire are both going to be battleground states for Electoral Votes. Winning those two states could make the difference in winning the election because Obama won both in 2008. At this point, Romney is the only GOP candidate leading Obama in those two states. We’ll see in the months to come if that continues to be the case.
Freshman senator Marco Rubio of Florida will make his first apperance on NBC’s Meet the Press tomorrow morning, May 1rst, 2011.
Rubio was scheduled to appear on Meet the Press in September of 2010 to face off against his former rivals, Charlie Crist (I) and Kendrick Meek (D), during the 2010 Florida senatorial race. The illness of Rubio’s Father prevented him from attending the event.
I am told by sources that tomorrows discussions will center on the debt, energy/gas prices, and possibly foreign policy.
Rubio has been a fiscal hawk since announcing his primary run in 2009. He has never waivered from his message of reducing government spending.
Meet the Press airs on NBC from 9-10 am on Sunday. Check local listings for the time in your area.
Krauthammer told Matt Lewis that Trump is “completely wrong” because “I’m a very happy guy.” He said he had no interest in continuing the “Trump affair,” and said he had “run out of adjectives” for Trump. Therefore, Krauthammer said, “I’ll let him have the last word.”
