Romney Campaign Distributing Flier in Florida Claiming Rick Perry Wants to “Kill Social Security” – Photo

I guess this shows how desperate Mitt Romney is about what Rick Perry has done to his poll numbers.

This is a Mitt Romney Campaign flier being distributed in Florida door-to-door to GOP households. Romney clearly believes he can kill Perry’s Campaign by claiming that Perry wants to “kill” Social Security.

Romney knows that’s not true because he was standing beside Rick Perry during the recent GOP Debate when Perry said if you are a current retiree or nearing retirement – “you have nothing to worry about.” He knows Perry wants to reform the program so that younger workers don’t get ripped off in the end.

But this is the Mitt Romney we saw in 2007-2008 as he ran for President. He did this kind of thing to Fred Thompson and other candidates. It appears he believes this is the only way to stop Perry. The next two GOP Debates will be in Florida. Expect this to come up. What Romney believes is his path to victory may just come back to haunt him. Rick Perry can now paint Romney as the defender of the status quo – the crass politician who’s afraid to tell the truth about the nation’s problems, and who will do anything for political expediency. It would be interesting if Perry just produced a copy of this flier during the debate this coming Monday night, and asked Romney if he stands by this kind of tactic.

The campaign has certainly begun in earnest.

My impression was not that Perry wants to destroy Social Security, rather like the rest of the GOP, including Romney, is stating it’s funding is a failure and the program needs fixed.  Romneys playing & twisting  words, and rather cheaply.
The way it’s funded makes the program unsustainable. Everyone knows that, even the Democrats and Libs.

That’s exactly right, Katielee. I hope most GOP voters in Florida understand that.

This is rather sad and pathetic, especially coming from another Republican…sounds like typical left-wing propaganda & DNC/WH talking points, as opposed to something emanating from a person who wants to be the nominee of the GOP !?!?!

My parents and many relatives live off of their justly earned SS benefits and all of them understand, even the least informed, that the system is not sustainable for those roughly under 45, due to demographics, funding, longevity of life of current retirees, worker to retiree ratio, etc.

As a native Floridian I can attest to the fact that this scare tactic has been used by the Dems, since time immemorial, in local, state, and national elections, down here.

Though I am a Gov. Perry supporter, the plan Herman Cain alluded to during the GOP debate (commenced during the government of Gen. Pinochet in Chile in 70′s) is excellent. It was created by the right-wing, Von Hayek imbued “Chicago Boys” he brought in to fix the Chilean economy, one of which included the late, great Milton Friedman.

I especially like the photos. The angry, mean looking Perry and the warm sunny Romney.

    What a RINO tool.

  • just an average voter

As someone who was a lifelong democrat until 2008, and who wants SS sustainable, I am very surprised that Romney would be stupid to use democrat tactics against Perry.  I watched Perry’s words, that is not was he said.
I do think Perry should have elaborated in that setting, but I saw him on other forums where he goes in depth to explain, yes its a ponzi scheme, but it needs to be reformed so it can be strengthened for the future.

I have family members on SS currently, and they already know their benefits won’t be touched, but people in my generation will have nothing if SS is not reformed.
I think perhaps its good Romney is using democrat tactics on Perry, it will strengthen Perry’s defense against such tactics.

While I plan on voting for whoever the republican nominee is, I am still uncertain as to who to support in the GOP primaries, I am leaning towards Perry, mainly because he seems have a very good economic track record in TX, and he is very blunt in his criticism of Obama. Also, I am seeing Perry is a very astute fighter, and a hard fighter, against the dems and the media that is one in the same in my opinion.

This attack by Romney against Perry makes me want to support Perry more, because Romney doesn’t seem to understand such an attack tactic only would have worked had millions of viewers not heard Perry themselves and heard something different than how Romney is presenting it.
But this also allows Perry to tone in his defense against this attack tactic.

You’re right, average voter. If Social Security is not reformed, it will be broke by the time younger workers get to retirement age – even though they will have paid into the system all their lives.

Interesting Carlos. Do you think this tactic by Romney is going to work in Florida?

Very carefully selected photos, weren’t they!

Romney, from ’07-’08 has a pretty good ground game in Florida…I am with Gov. Perry, as you know, but he needs to start laying the ground work here and quickly.

Last Friday, Romney opened up his campaign office in Tampa.

Gov. Scott, I believe, is inclined to support Perry, but at this point that might be the proverbial ‘kiss of death’ because he is pretty unpopular right now.

I think Romney was hoping people missed that. But as you said, Perry said it in his opening, and has explained his stance on SS, several times-never saying he advocated ‘killing’ the program. Cheap political shot by Romney— and an ‘unsustainable’ accusation. Perry got to clarify that tonight on the CNN Debate.
Perry is tough, he’s no pushover, and he stands his ground. But he also admits when he should have maybe handled something differently, i.e. the HPV issue.
