Gov. Rick Perry Speech at Florida CPAC: Says GOP Doesn’t Need “Smoothest Debater” or “Slickest Candidate” as Nominee – Complete Video 9/23/11

Gov. Rick Perry is trying to move on after his poor debate performance last night, and he did so today during a speech to the Florida CPAC Conference. Perry made the case that it’s not the best debater or the “slickest candidate” that the GOP should nominate:

“As conservatives, we know that values and vision matter. It’s not who is the slickest candidate or the smoothest debater that we need to elect. We need to elect the candidate with the best record and the best vision for this country.”

Perry also went after President Obama on a number of fronts, including Obama’s plan to increase medical costs for older veterans. Perry said America’s veterans have “already sacrificed enough for their country.”

the immigration issue will be perrys downfall.  even the focus group about 1/3rd of them after the debate changed there minds about perry and went with someone else. i think you are going to see perrys numbers dropping in the polls now. i changed my mind about him and will go with someone else.

I understood his point on immigration, even if I don’t agree with it. This wasn’t a ‘mandate’ by Perry. It went through the proper channels and was approved.  I liked the rest of his answer though, I think. How he would handle immigration on a larger scale may be somewhat different.
One thing I have liked about Perry, is he does rethink (not recalibrate like Obama) his positions and decisions–that shows some capacity for flexibility–without flip-flopping. He has his own stance and will hold it when he has to, but is not rigid, and will admit if he should have approached something differently.
And he is right, we don’t need another smooth talker. We already see how that works out with Obama.
