National Right to Life Committee Vouches for Herman Cain: “Herman Cain’s Pro-Life” – 10/21/11

While some are attacking Herman Cain as not being Pro-Life, the National Right to Life Committee today came out and vouched for Cain’s Pro-Life commitment. Cain reiterated today that he is “pro-Life from conception – no exceptions!”

LIFENEWS: The National Right to Life Committee is today vouching for Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain’s bona fides, saying the businessman who is considered by many to be the current GOP frontrunner is pro-life.

NRLC’s comments come after a 48-hour period during which Cain has confused pro-life voters where he stands — by first using seemingly pro-abortion language saying government should have no involvement before finally clarifying he is pro-life and saying he wants abortions illegal.

“Herman Cain’s pro-life,” David O’Steen, executive director of the National Right to Life Committee, told National Review. “He addressed our convention last June. We are quite confident in his pro-life position. When he ran in the primary for senate some years back … he ran as a pro-life candidate then in Georgia. We’ve known of him for a number of years, and he’s always taken a pro-life position.”

At that event, Cain, the former businessman and candidate, said the “Founding fathers got it right” including the right to life from conception.

“Don’t infringe on the rights of somebody else and that includes the unborn,” Cain said of what the Constitution requires. . . . Read More

Cain’s position depends who he is talking to at the time.  He is making it up as he goes. If Cain had any core principles on this critical issue, he would not be “confusing the pro-life voters” on this.  He would take a stand, articulate it well, and stick with it.

I am sick of seeing Cain back pedal all the time and get a pass for it.  The NRLC lost a lot of credibility with this statement.  Was the NRLC “quite confident in his pro-life position” when Cain endorsed pro-abortion Romney in 2008?

If all pro-life voters have is pro-abortion flip-flopper Romney, another abortion flip-flopper in Cain, and Perry who endorsed pro-abortion Giuliani, who else do we have?  Ron Paul is the last man standing; and he is actually discussing his pro-life position in his speeches and TV ads – that is a refreshing change.

NRLC, please spare me the fundraising letter next quarter.

The National Right to Life Committee is not confused. When you get to the place you actually try to argue that Herman Cain is a liberal, you know you have lost all perspective. Herman Cain is as conservative as they come.

Strange new definition of conservatism.  Keep believing.

Cain’s latest abortion flip flop aside, there is little difference between Obama and Cain.  Vote for either.

Both favored TARP bail-outs, both are pro-gun control (Cain at the state level, Obama at the Federal level), neither is really serious about any meaningful reduction in the size of government, and both want to raise taxes (Cain on the middle class, Obama on the rich).

    Jaayyy,
There are other candidates in the field that I like as well, and are also genuine conservatives. But, my goodness, you can’t actually believe that there is little difference between Herman Cain and Barack Obama. We all have to step back from this GOP Nomination battle and get some perspective. It’s gotten too emotional.

You can’t get away from the fact that Cain favored the TARP bail-outs, Cain supports gun control at the state level, Cain wants additional revenue streams for the government, Cain has said nothing substantive about cutting the size of government, and lately Cain has flipped flopped several times over the issue of abortion, and Cain refuses to sign the pro-life pledge.

Yes, Cain is a lot like Obama.

He certainly has not done well in some interviews at articulating what has been his stated position on abortion for a long time. I really don’t believe he has a pro-choice bone in his body, but I’ll grant you that his comments in the interviews were troubling. I still consider Cain to be a strong conservative, but the unforced error in what he said is a problem.

But I would not mention Cain and Obama in the same sentence (I guess I just did!).

Bravo!  Finally, we can put this danged argument to bed once and for all!

I re-posted this at my blog.  It was fantastic!  I gave you full credit, of course.  :)

    Cain on gun control:

BLITZER: All right. Let’s talk about gun control. Do you support any gun control?
CAIN: I support the Second Amendment.
BLITZER: So you don’t — so what’s the answer on gun control?
    CAIN:
The answer on gun control is I support strong — strongly support the
Second Amendment. I don’t support, you know, onerous legislation that’s
going to restrict people’s rights in order to be able to protect
themselves as guaranteed by the Second Amendment.
BLITZER: Should states or local governments be allowed to control the gun situation? Or should…
    CAIN: Yes.
    BLITZER: The answer is yes?
CAIN: The answer is yes. That should be a state’s decision.
