A new Des Moines Register “Iowa Poll” released tonight shows Herman Cain with a 1-point lead over Mitt Romney in the first-in-the-nation voting state of Iowa. The Iowa Caucuses will be held January 3, 2012.

Cain and Romney are way ahead of the rest of the GOP Field, with Ron Paul coming in a distant third. The poll is bad news for Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who is only at 7%. As recently as August 31, Perry was at 29% in Iowa. It’s also bad news for Michele Bachmann, who came in at 8%. In the last Register Poll, Bachmann was at 22%.

In the 21-day average of polls in Iowa, Herman Cain now holds a 4.6-point lead over Mitt Romney, 27%-22.4%.
