Byron York: Newt Gingrich the “Big Winner” at the Iowa GOP’s Ronald Reagan Dinner

The Washington Examiner’s Byron York says Newt Gingrich was the “big winner” last night at the Iowa GOP’s Ronald Reagan Dinner. York said Gingrich’s speech left a real impression on the crowd, and in interviews with attendees afterward, it was nearly unanimous that Gingrich won the night:

WASHINGTON EXAMINER (Byron York): For days, there’s been talk of a Newt Gingrich boomlet in the Republican presidential race here in Iowa. After Friday night’s Reagan Dinner at Hy-Vee Hall in downtown Des Moines, that Gingrich boomlet talk might turn into talk of a Gingrich boom.

Five candidates — Gingrich, Rick Perry, Michele Bachmann, Rick Santorum, and Ron Paul — addressed a crowd of about 1,000 GOP faithful at the state Republican party’s biggest fundraiser of the year. In brief interviews after the dinner — the only question was which speaker did the best job — audience members were unanimous: Gingrich, Gingrich, Gingrich.

“It was Newt,” said Chad Kleppe of Waukee, Iowa. “I think he’s the smartest one in the field.”

“Gingrich knocked it out of the park,” said Earlene Nordstrom of Fort Dodge, Iowa.

“Newt,” said Tim Heldt of Johnston. “The energy in the room picked up. It didn’t feel like a stump speech.”

“He is so good,” said Becky Ervin of Urbandale. “I want to see a debate between him and Obama.”

“I would have to say Newt Gingrich might have convinced me to caucus for him,” said Eric Johansen of Grimes. “I’ve been undecided up to this point.”

In a dozen interviews, the score was Gingrich 12, the rest of the field 0. That doesn’t mean everyone will vote for Gingrich at the January 3 Iowa caucuses — voters here reserve the right to hold off on making a final decision until the night of the voting — but they certainly walked away impressed with the former House speaker. . . . i think newt is very smart man and maybe the one coming up from behind in this. in a debate between obama and newt i think newt would destroy him. we will see what happens in the coming months.

I’ve been impressed with Gingrich as well in the past few months. I’d much rather have him as POTUS than Cain or Romney. He’s remarkably intelligent, probably the most brainy candidate in the field–he knows his stuff, and he also follows the 11th commandment.

But you just watch. The media will start fawning over him, just like they did to Herman Cain, blowing his support way out of proportion, making everyone think the whole country’s behind him. He’ll be on every TV show and every radio station you can name. He might even get to the top of the polls. And then there will be some hit piece and everyone will remember all his baggage. Anyone who thinks his affairs or his collaboration with Nancy Pelosi on global warming will be inconsequential is just plain naive.

I could be wrong, and I’m willing to be pleasantly surprised. But I’m getting concerned that the people aren’t going to rally behind one anti-Romney before January. We have two viable anti-Romneys: Perry and Gingrich. I see Gingrich’s baggage weighing him down. Perry is working his way back up, but if anyone was impressed by him at the Reagan Dinner last night, the media sure won’t mention it.

I agree, a debate with Newt and Obama would be the best entertainment the American people have had since Reagan/Mondale! But like you, I’m waiting to see what happens. When Cain won the FL straw poll I was hesitant to jump off the Perry Ferry and get on the Cain Train. I’m so glad now that I didn’t switch. I will again withhold judgment, continue to support the candidate I know best, and just see what happens.

I have to agree with the other commentators. I used to deeply despise Newt G. because I was a loyal democrat, yes, I voted for clinton both times.  I hate to admit it, but he’s really been impressive in the debates, he doesn’t seem to attack any other repubs, but Obama himself– until this whole issue of last week, that applied to Cain as well, he went after Barry not the other repubs.
And I liked Perry, but no way am I voting for him in the primaries, he may be a good gov, but he cannot debate. And unfortunately with the Obot MSM on Obama’s side, debates will be extremely unfair, and Newt going after the LSM was great!

I saw it constantly when I was campaigning for Hillary in 2008, the bias in the leftist media, in a debate against Barry, Newt would tear apart barry as well as the media that coddles and protects him.

I’m really at this point undecided who to vote for in the repub primary, I have never voted in a repub primary before, anyone who can beat Barry next november is my primary concern, but I also want someone who will shrink the govt, and liberalize the free market more.
