CBS News’ Bob Schieffer Presses Ron Paul on Foreign Policy Issues; Paul Says It is Not Helpful to Have U.S. Troops Stationed Anywhere Overseas – Video 11/20/11

Here is video from Face the Nation today where CBS News Bob Schieffer directly asked Rep. Ron Paul if “9/11 happened because of actions the United States took.” Paul answered that, “Our policies definitely had an influence.” Once again, Paul cited what Al-Qaeda has said about the U.S. as proof that our actions helped to cause 9/11.

Schieffer also pressed Paul on his view that we need to talk more with Iran to prevent them from developing Nuclear Weapons. Paul not only is against using military force to stop Iran, he opposes using sanctions against them either.

On stationing U.S. Troops anywhere in world, Schieffer wants to bring all U.S. Troops home – including from Japan and South Korea. Schieffer asked if Paul thought there was anywhere in the world he thinks it helps us to have U.S. Troops, and Paul said, “No” – other than possibly on a submarine.

Paul has never said “America Provoked the 9/11 attacks”; Fox is as biased and inaccurate as CBS.

In this instance, former Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz agrees with Ron Paul:

“There are a lot of things that are different now, and one that has gone by almost unnoticed–but it’s huge–is that by complete mutual agreement between the U.S. and the Saudi government we can now remove almost all of our forces from Saudi Arabia.

“Their presence there over the last 12 years has been a source of enormous difficulty for a friendly government. It’s been a huge recruiting device for al Qaeda. In fact if you look at bin Laden, one of his principle grievances was the presence of so-called crusader forces on the holy land, Mecca and Medina.”

“Paul said, ‘No’ – other than possibly on a submarine.”

Freedom’s Lights Out might try for once not misrepresenting Paul’s position.  Paul has no problem with sending troops abroad, he just has the audacity to suggest that we should obey Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution, and actual properly declare war first.  Once we deploy troops they should fight, win, and then return home; instead of staying behind for decades occupying and nation building.  That has always been Paul’s position.

Listen to what Paul said in the video. He was asked point-blank if he thought it helps the U.S. to have troops stationed anywhere overseas and he said “No.” The question was not on whether Paul would use military force under any circumstances, and I did not say Paul was against using military force for any reason. He did say he was against military action against Iran as well as using sanctions against Iran.

    Jaayyy,

That’s exactly what the post reports Paul as saying – That he is against “stationing” troops anywhere in the world. As you said, Paul believes “once we deploy troops they should fight, win, and then return home. . .”

The “submarine” comment was a deliberate attempt to minimize Paul’s consistent position on the issue.  You are pulling a Schieffer.

Not one in twenty Americans wants war with Iran.  At the very least the issue is a looser for Republicans.  Paul is also spot on about the fact that sanctions are a precursor to war, just like they were with Iraq.

Frederic Bastiat said the same centuries ago; “when goods do not cross borders soldiers will.”

“Stationing” for decades to occupy and “nation build” is hardly the same as deploying, fighting, winning and leaving.

    Jaayyy,
The “submarine” comment came out of Ron Paul’s mouth. Watch the video (4:45 mark).  Those are his words, not mine.

Which is why you had paraphrase it; and distort its meaning with yet another snarky “column;” to wit, “…other than possibly on a submarine…”

More commentary without context from Brian Schieffer in Florida.

    Jaayyy,
Rep. Paul said this when asked if he thought there was anywhere in the world it helps us to have U.S. Troops stationed:  ”No, other than the fact I think a submarine is a very worthwhile weapon, and I believe we can defend ourselves with submarines and all our troops back at home.” -4:45 mark of the video

From that answer, I understood Paul to mean he does not want U.S. Troops stationed anywhere ongoing other than to serve on submarines.
