Newt Gingrich GOP Debate Comments Advocating “Legal” Status for Some Illegals – Video 11/22/11

Here’s video from last night of Newt Gingrich’s comments on Immigration that have created a firestorm. Gingrich said he would deport many people who have no real ties to the U.S., and create some kind of “a board” that would evaluate the millions of other illegals who have been here many years. For those who have been here “25 years,” have been paying taxes, and are part of the community, he thinks there should be a way to make those folks “legal,” although not give them citizenship.

Michele Bachmann and Mitt Romney immediately moved during the debate to hammer Gingrich for supporting “amnesty”, and they are pressing that attack today.

NOTE: Notice Romney’s face on the splitscreen with Gingrich at the 4:30 mark of the video as Gingrich twists in the wind, trying to explain his remarks. He looks like he’s thinking, “I just won the GOP Nomination.”

I didn’t really see any change in Romney’s facial expression – I think he’s mastered the poker face during his opponents comments.  However, Gingrich didn’t think through that ridiculous proposal.  Good grief, can you imagine your town and every town having a panel that decides who gets to stay and who has to go based on their church attendance and how long they’ve managed to fly under the radar? What nonsense.

It’s not so much that there was a change, but I think he thought Gingrich had just handed him the nomination with those comments. He may have, too. It gave Romney the chance to cast himself as the conservative on the issue.

Gingrich should never have made those comments. He essentially said what Perry did, that began his implosion.

Speaking as an independent voter, I liked what Newt said. It was reasoned, and well articulated. I don’t want amnesty, however in all honestly granting legality to someone who’s been in this country for a long time, yet came illegally is a form of amnesty. However the issue I have is, how would this stop others from coming.

As for Romney, in 2007 he went a step further calling for actually granting of citizenship to illegals, which I absolutely disagree on… here is the video.  Both have good points, and if Romney is stupid to not realize he suggested basically the same thing just a few years back, he needs to brush up on all his positions over the years. I’d still vote for either over that moron in the WH.
