Mitt Romney Opposed the 1994 “Contract with America” that Led to the First GOP House Majority in 40 Years – Video 1994

At The Corner, Katrina Trinko has posted evidence from 1994 showing that Mitt Romney did not support the conservative “Contract with America” that brought about the first Republican House Majority in 40 years. This was in Mitt Romney’s pro-abortion days, when he was running against Sen. Ted Kennedy. Actually, I found video (above) of Romney saying in a Senate Debate in 1994 that he opposed the “Contract with America”:

THE CORNER: In 1994, Mitt Romney, running against Ted Kennedy for the senate, did not back the Contract with America. From the October 1, 1994 edition of the Boston Globe (emphasis mine):

Republican US Senate hopeful Mitt Romney yesterday distanced himself from a GOP leadership move to rally congressional candidates behind a “contract with America” – a 10-point manifesto that embraces welfare cuts, tax cuts and a beefed-up military.

All you have to do is go read the article, watch the clip, and most notably the update at the bottom.  He didn’t oppose any of the platforms, just the idea that one side “wins” making the other side “losers”.  He was opposing the divisiveness. (Newt was the originator of divisiveness.)

I find it interesting that past dealings and associations matter when we talk about Obama, after all, they make him who he is and can’t be ignored.  But when it comes to Newt, after only a few weeks of glory in the polls, even some on fox claim a weariness over hearing any significant issues, dealings, or associations that might discredit Newt in anyway.  Obama’s gifted tongue deceived us once, lets not let another gifted tongue with a questionable background deceive us again!

Absolutely Newt Gingrich’s past should be considered — but so should Mitt Romney’s.

There has been divisiveness in politics since before the first U.S. President. The Democrats hated Ronald Reagan, calling him “just an actor,” a “buffoon,” and did everything they could to tear him down. That was long before Newt Gingrich was Speaker of the House.

You don’t think it reached an entirely different level during the Gingrich/Clinton years?  I sure do.

Romney’s has been considered ad nauseum and will continue no doubt.  Gingrich is only recently a serious candidate and has decades of history to sort through yet we’re already hearing that it’s getting old.
