The Rick Perry Gaffes Continue: Forgets Name of Justice Sotomayor and How Many Justices are on the High Court – Video 12/9/11

Poor Rick Perry. The gaffes just keep coming.

Here he is talking to the Des Moines Register Editorial Board where he started to name “activist judge” appointments to the Supreme Court made by Barack Obama. But he then went completely blank once again and could not remember Justice Sonya Sotomayor’s name, taking a stab at it finally with, “Montamayor.”

It’s not a big deal really, but he then later compounded it (not in the video) by also forgetting how many Supreme Court Justices there are! He said there are eight instead of nine. What makes that amazing is that Rick Perry became Governor of Texas when George W. Bush’s victory was assured in 2000 when the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 (=9) against Al Gore’s endless recount in Florida.

    I’m feeling sorry for the poor guy.  I do wish he hadn’t gotten in the race, he could’ve governed Texas forever.  After Iowa he’ll go home but it will never be the same.  Texans who weren’t paying attention before are now embarrassed about him.  I doubt he gets re-elected as Governor.  I feel a little empathy for him with his swiss cheese memory, but that’s why I’m not running for president.  You have to be on top of your game in every way.

    I actually think Perry would do well as President. But he is just not a good candidate. I do feel sorry for him, because I’m sure he’s doing his best.

    Did Perry forget the number of justices on the court, or was Perry discussing a referenced 1963 ruling (Abington v Schempp) which came down 8-1 in favor of banning school sponsored Bible readings in public schools? This issue had already been discussed with Perry referencing the Supreme Court and a 1962 ruling (decision was 1963), and the Des Moines Register came back to the issue, which was when Perry mentioned the 8 justices.

    Very interesting Deez Nutz. You could be right. I was not aware of that. The only video of the interview I saw was this one. Forgetting Sotomayor’s name and his other forgetful episodes automatically make one think he got the number of justices wrong. But that may not be the case. I’ll see if I can find anything about that.
