Newt Gingrich Web Ad Uses Washington’s Crossing of the Delaware 235 Years Ago to Rally Troops in Presidential Race: “Victory or Death” – Video 12/26/11

Wow. What a different kind of ad.

Here is video of Newt Gingrich’s newest web ad, “Victory or Death.” The ad tells the story of General George Washington’s daring crossing of the Delaware River during the Revolutionary War to defeat Hessian Troops at Trenton, New Jersey, 235 years ago today, December 26, 1776. The password for the operation was “Victory or Death.” Washington won a great victory, and within weeks thousands of volunteers showed up and the Revolution was saved.

Gingrich draws the parallel with the current Presidential Campaign, saying:

“The password for that evening was “Victory or Death,” and they meant it. They were prepared to give everything for freedom. Surely, in the most successful country in history, we can do what is necessary. We can be in the spirit of Gen. Washington and the Americans who fought for freedom. We can go out, get the vote out, make the argument, stand up for freedom, and I believe we can have as big an impact in helping America remain free in our generation as they did in theirs.”

Gingrich’s indirect message seems to be: When hope appears lost, a victory in Iowa could create momentum to save his campaign and propel him to victory in the GOP Race and in the 2012 Election. The history lesson is outstanding and inspiring. But I’m not sure of the wisdom of comparing a Presidential Campaign to the gravity of the situation that faced George Washington and the Revolutionary Army.

You have missed the point entirely. He is not talking about HIS campaign. Gingrich is talking about the fork in the road that the American people are facing with the upcoming election. This is about socialism versus democracy. The spot is very moving and does not overstate the seriousness of the decision that every voting American will make in 2012 .
