Sears Announces they will Close 100-120 Kmart & Sears Stores in this “Difficult Economic Environment” – 12/27/11

After “terrible holiday sales,” Sears has announced they will close 100-120 of their Sears and Kmart Stores, given “the difficult economic environment.” No word yet on which stores will be closed.

NEW YORK TIMES: Between 100 and 120 Sears and Kmart stores will be closed, the retailer said Tuesday, after terrible holiday sales during what is the most crucial time of the year for retailers.

Sears has yet to determine which stores will be closed, but there has been a clear shift in where the retailer will devote its resources.

The company is moving away from its practice of propping up “marginally performing” stores in hopes of improving their performance. Sears said it will now concentrate on cash-generating stores.

“Given our performance and the difficult economic environment, especially for big-ticket items, we intend to implement a series of actions to reduce ongoing expenses, adjust our asset base, and accelerate the transformation of our business model,” said CEO Louis D’Ambrosio. “These actions will better enable us to focus our investments on serving our customers.”. . . . This is too bad.  I would encourage everyone to shop at K-Mart or Sears this week if there is anything you need that you would normally go to a different store for.  Sears is a large employer of the military.  If you are a reservist they not only hold your job for you during deployment but will make up the difference in pay so you don’t get a pay cut, they also maintain your Sears benefits.  They have employed many retired military over the years as well.  It’s a patriotic company.
