Video Surfaces of Newt Gingrich in 2008 Strongly Pushing an Individual Health Care Mandate – Video

Via Andrew Kaczynski at Buzzfeed, here is a 2008 video of Newt Gingrich strongly pushing the need for an individual health care mandate – requiring everyone to buy insurance or post some kind of a bond.

“I think you gotta require that everybody have insurance or post a bond,” he said. To be able to afford insurance and not buy it, he said, is “immoral.”

Gingrich has been attacking Mitt Romney over his RomneyCare plan in Massachusetts, which required the uninsured to purchase insurance.

Wow. I had not seen this before, and this was right before the DeathCare bill was beginning its ram up to being crammed down on America. So he was for it, before he was against it?

I do not support an individual mandate, however I do understand that there are people who use the system and pay nothing, but forcing everyone to pay will not make access better, or quality better, or prices lower!

While I did support Hillary in the 2008 primaries, I did not support her Hillarycare from the 90′s, however she altered it a bit for 2008, which some parts sort of made sense, it was making people get insurance at the point of contact, when they went into seek medical care and could not pay, then they had to be enrolled into some plan, but if pay on your own or take good care and don’t go in the first place, no burden should be placed on you.

But then comes the second issue, even if you force people to get insurance at the point of contact, there still needs to be a market where competition between companies makes quality up and prices down, and that’s just insurance, not healthcare. I also agree with something Dr Seigel on Fox said, people need to be made to pay more for services, routine ones, so they understand this is not free care, and will only seek help when they truly need it and will take more personal responsibility to take better care of themselves in the first place.

This is a complicated issue, but there are free market, contitutionally viable solutions. Not this one size fits all “if you like your doctor you get to keep him/her” lies and nonsense!!
