BREAKING: Rick Perry just announced he will be going back to Texas to “reassess” the future of his campaign. From the tone, there’s little doubt that means he is going to drop out of the GOP Presidential race. Perry came in a distant 5th place tonight in Iowa after spending millions of dollars. . .

He didn’t say he was dropping out, so don’t put words in his mouth.  He said he was returning to Texas – going home for a break after a grueling fight, and pray and reflect (and probably strategize) for the path forward.  He has likened this to a marathon or a war, and honestly believes that Texas is a model for the rest of the country.  Don’t count him out just yet.

I didn’t put words in his mouth. I said from his tone, it sounds like he is going to end his campaign. Couple that with the fact he was saying earlier in the day he was going straight to South Carolina from Iowa, the return to Texas would indicate there is a change of heart. We’ll see. I like Perry, and I thought he was going to stay in for the long haul – until I heard his speech tonight.

While watching CNN early in the night, I saw and heard a woman counting votes.  She said–at least I thought, “57, 58, 59, 70, 71, 72, Romney.”  I thought I must have heard incorrectly, but that has bothered ever since.  Given the 8-vote difference between Santorum and Romney,  that woman’s speech has been particularly troubling.  Someone with access to CNN tapes should check.

    Peter,
You were right about Perry staying in. NBC just confirmed Perry will stay in the race and his headed for South Carolina. I’m surprised and I’m glad.

    I heard her too, but she said “67, 68, 69, 70, 71, 72 . . .”  Not to worry – no mistake.

As a Romney supporter I am THRILLED! I was getting a little horrified that Perry and Bachmann were going to leave the conservative vote in SC all for Santorum.  Perry helps Romney quite a bit.
