Fred Thompson Says Romney Team thinks they have “Matt Drudge in their Back Pocket” – Video 1/29/12

Here is a video clip from yesterday’s “Meet the Press” where Fred Thompson cited a New York Times article that said the Romney Campaign seemed to have “Matt Drudge in their back pocket.” The relevant quote from the article is below, and it says much of what the Romney Campaign dispensed in attacks against Newt Gingrich found its way onto The Drudge Report. The Gingrich Team finally gave up on trying to get the Drudge staff “to spare them”:

NEW YORK TIMES: . . . A team of some of the most fearsome researchers in the business, led by Mr. Romney’s campaign manager, Matt Rhoades, spent days dispensing negative information about Mr. Gingrich, much of it finding its way to the influential Drudge Report, which often serves as a guide for conservative talk radio and television assignment editors and to which Mr. Rhoades has close ties.

The effort hit a peak by Thursday, when the site was virtually taken over by headlines assailing Mr. Gingrich, whose advisers said they eventually gave up on trying to persuade the Drudge staff to spare them, acknowledging, in the words of one aide, that “very little can be done.” . . . Read More

I’m not sure the evidence would bear that out. Drudge posts whatever is bubbling in the news at a given point in time. He’s had headlines about Newt rising and doing well in South Carolina and at other times. It has just been a lousy week for Newt Gingrich, and virtually all the headlines bear that out.
