NY Democrat Rep. Kathy Hochul Admits at Raucous Town Hall: “Basically, We’re Not Looking to the Constitution” when it Comes to ObamaCare Mandates – Raw Video 2/24/12

Oh my. Rarely do you get a Democrat to lift the veil enough to say exactly what they are all about. This is one of those moments.

Here is raw video of New York Democrat Rep. Kathy Hochul (NY CD-26) being asked at a Town Hall Meeting yesterday (by Freedom’s Lighthouse reader “Brad!”) where the Constitution allows the Federal Government to require a “private or religious organization to pay for anything for free?”

Incredibly, Hochul’s answer? “Well, basically, we’re not looking to the Constitution on that aspect of it.”

The crowd went wild, clearly shocked that this Democrat would just come out and say what we already know about Obama and those who support him – They don’t care what the U.S. Constitution says. If it gets in the way of their agenda, it is to be ignored.

Great job by our friend, Brad, who asked precisely the right question, and followed up on her shocking answer by saying:

“We are also entitled to the freedoms under the First Amendment of the Constitution. That comes before any of the other “freedoms.” So, we have to look at the Constitution.”

The Founders never expected the United States to be a global superpower, Brian, and were living in a pre-industrial age. I would suggest to you that the Louisiana Purchase, the Mexican War, the steam engine, and Sam Colt’s perfection of the assembly line [you could throw the transistor into that list, since microchips are bunches of tiny transistors] have done more to create a world that horrifies me than anything couched in the subjunctive, even if I agreed with the case so made.

Anyway, it depends on which Founder you mean. Jefferson believed in limited government, but didn’t mind exceeding his Constitutional authority to buy Lousiana from Napoleon by spending money without Congressional authorization [Napoleon, by the way, didn't really own it]. Washington warned against foreign entanglements, but didn’t object when Adams enlarged the Navy to fight the Barbary Pirates; and the Navy, since it allows us to project power anywhere, has probably done more to make us an international power than anything else, aside from our enormous resources.

And I would argue that becoming an international power, which led to today’s national security apparatus, has done more to endanger indivdual liberty in the country than any document, however wise and prescient.

It”s much like Lincoln said: ” I claim not to have controlled events, but confess plainly that events have controlled me.”

I can’t disagree with much of what you say there. Though we may not agree on some of the issues of the day, I appreciate the respectful way you approach the debate. We need more of that in America today.

It was me he asked the bible-contraception question.  It’s an irrelevant question to this discussion because the Catholic religion indicates it is immoral so forcing Catholics to provide is against the First Amendment.  As far as saying the Bible has no proscription against abortion, that is preposterous unless you either ignore the commandment “you shall not kill” or you ignore science which indicates the person inside the womb is in-fact a human-being and never came out an elephant.

That’s right Brad. The issue here is the violation of religious liberty – not the debate of when life begins. I agree with you completely that the Bible makes it clear from God’s perspective when life begins – from conception. It speaks of life in the womb, and that God considers that life to be a person He said to the prophet Jeremiah:

Jeremiah 1:5 - “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”

But what Obama has done is to try and force people to violate their religious beliefs – and that is against the First Amendment.

Ah – you have those verses down so well -  great work Brian!

  • Andrew Reinbach

Thanks, Brian; we’re on the same page on that one. If you talk instead of shouting slogans past each other, the amount of uncovered common ground is staggering.

I agree. Thanks for sharing your views.

Well Hochul finally responsed to the media after this being headline news for 1 week!  She said she misspoke and should have said under Article 1, Congress makes the laws.  Um, a few problems.  She didn’t mention which section of Article 1.  The HSS Mandate was a creation fo the Executive branch, not Legislative.  And the rest of the Constitution explains what the Federal Government and Congress can and cannot do (i.e. you cannot make a law saying that the President has no authority).   Good grief – what kind of leaders do we have that give there people kindergarten concepts around how the country is supposed to work?

Oh my. You exposed her true feelings on the Constitution for all to see.

This has been going on too long, it’s a good start but our law enforcement has a long way to go.

When someone hides behind religion to do or say something that is wrong we should stand up and point it out (right the wrong).

When I was a kid I lived in Utah, and the Boy Scouts was taken over
by Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS
Church). This, so called religion, practices underage polygamy, they
send the boy s off on missions to divide the underage sisters among the
dirty old men of the clan. Now when these underage girls get pregnant,
these same dirty old men, send them to the state to get their welfare
checks. You should see some of the palace homes that are paid with
welfare checks. By the way this is the newest religion that was created
right here in United States of America.
