Report: South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley to Appoint Rep. Tim Scott to Fill U.S. Senate Seat being Vacated by Sen. Jim DeMint; Announcement Set for 12NN ET – 12/17/12
South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley will reportedly announced GOP Rep. Tim Scott as her appointment to fill the soon-to-be vacated U.S. Senate seat of Sen. Jim DeMint. DeMint will soon leave the Senate to take the helm of the conservative think-tank, The Heritage Foundation. Some earlier reports had indicated Haley was leaning toward former South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster for the post:
WASHINGTON POST: South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) will announce Monday that she will appoint Rep. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) to the Senate, according to two sources with knowledge of the pick.
Haley is set to announce the pick at noon.
Scott, 47, will replace Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), who is leaving the chamber in January to head up the conservative Heritage Foundation.
Sen.-designate Scott will become the only African-American currently serving in the Senate and the first black Republican to serve in the upper chamber since the 1970s. . . . Read More
