Dick Morris Assesses, “What Happens if Rick Santorum Wins” the GOP Nomination? – Video 2/21/12

Here is video of Dick Morris giving his take on what happens if Sen. Rick Santorum winds up winning the GOP Presidential Nomination.

Morris said he really likes Santorum personally, pointing out that he is a very genuine, consistent, likable person. But, his worry with Santorum is his ability to win in states like Pennsylvania – his home state. Morris pointed out Santorum’s loss as an incumbent Senator in his 2006 re-election bid by 18 points. Morris did not say he doesn’t think Santorum can’t win, but that it is more of a risk than nominating Mitt Romney. With Romney, Morris seems to think it’s less of an electability risk, but you might not wind up with as committed a conservative as you will with Santorum. As he put it: “So, it’s kind of what’s more important to you – a pure candidate or someone who is more likely to win.”

One thing Morris said that is certainly the case: If Santorum is the nominee, the Obama Campaign will do all they can to make the election about social issues, believing they can demonize Santorum as an extremist. I’m not sure that would be a winning strategy for Obama, but they will certainly try it, to keep the focus off of his dismal economic record.

Newt Gingrich Says GOP Nomination Race “is Going to Go On for a Long Time”; Believes He Will Benefit from Romney Attacks on Santorum – Video 2/15/12

Here is video of Newt Gingrich on with Greta Van Susteren last night where he said the GOP Presidential race “is going to go on for a long time.” Gingrich did not seem to be disturbed by news that the Texas Primary will likely move back to late May or early June rather than be held on April 4. Gingrich has counted on winning in Texas. But Gingrich believes he will do well on Super Tuesday, “and have a pretty good number of delegates by mid-March.” Gingrich believes he is going to benefit from Mitt Romney attacks on Rick Santorum in Michigan and other states to come.

Newt Gingrich Spars with Reporters on whether He will Drop Out of the GOP Presidential Race – Video 2/13/12

The feeding frenzy on when Newt Gingrich will drop out of the GOP Presidential race has begun.

Here he is sparring with reporters on calls for him to get out of the race. He said it is “silly” to suggest he should drop out, and admitted it was wrong for him to call on Santorum to get out of the race several weeks ago, just as it is wrong now to suggest he should get out.

PPP Reports Michigan Poll in Process May Show Rick Santorum with Double-Digit Lead over Mitt Romney

Public Policy Polling is in the process of doing a poll in Michigan, and they tweeted last night that it looks like Rick Santorum is going to have a double-digit lead on Mitt Romney there. Romney was born in Michigan, and his father, George Romney, was Governor there. It is considered home turf for Romney. If Santorum beats him there, it will be a devastating blow to Romney.

However, notice that PPP also tweeted a note of caution that Santorum’s momentum may just be a blip on the screen as a result of his three-state victory last week:

Rick Santorum Turns GOP Race Upside Down with Stunning Sweep of Missouri, Minnesota, Colorado – 2/7/12

It’s a huge three state sweep for Rick Santorum in Tuesday’s contests – Missouri by 30 points (55%-25%), Minnesota by 18 points (45%-27%), and Colorado by 5 points (40%-35%). Almost no one thought this was possible, although I must point out I said this morning I thought there was a chance Santorum would win all three! Indeed, he did. The race is very different now, with Santorum showing he can defeat Mitt Romney head-to-head and on his turf.

MSNBC: Rick Santorum swept three nominating contests held Tuesday evening, upsetting frontrunner Mitt Romney and injecting new energy into the former Pennsylvania senator’s campaign.

Santorum scored broad victories in the Minnesota caucus and a primary in Missouri, according to NBC News projections. But Santorum’s most significant upset came in Colorado, where the state GOP declared him the apparent victor in caucuses there. Romney made his hardest push of the three states in Colorado, having campaigned there and spent money on advertising. Santorum’s upset raises fresh doubts about the breadth of Romney’s appeal to Republicans, and abates some of the momentum Romney had built from consecutive victories in the Florida primary and Nevada caucus.

“I don’t stand here to be the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney; I stand here to be the conservative alternative to Barack Obama,” Santorum told a raucous crowd in Missouri. . . . Read More

Newt Gingrich finished way back in all three contests tonight (didn’t even make the ballot in Missouri). Given how poorly he has shown in the last several contests, look for pressure to increase on him to get out of the race so conservatives can galvanize around one candidate to stop Mitt Romney.

Today is Shaping Up to be a Huge Day for Rick Santorum in GOP Primary / Caucus Voting – 2/7/12

New polls by Public Policy Polling (PPP) give Sen. Rick Santorum substantial leads and strong momentum in two of the three states voting today, February 7, in the GOP Presidential race.

PPP shows Santorum surging out to a 13 point lead in Missouri, where Santorum has a head-to-head matchup with Mitt Romney. Newt Gingrich decided to skip Missouri’s Primary because it is non-binding on delegates. That could turn out to be a huge tactical blunder by Gingrich, because it gives Santorum a golden opportunity to defeat Romney straight up in a one-on-one contest. If Santorum wins, and wins by a substantial margin in Missouri, it will give him a great deal of momentum, and evidence to point to, in making the case that he is the best conservative to take on Romney and then Obama.

PPP also shows Santorum moving out to a 9 point lead over Romney in Minnesota, with Newt Gingrich well behind, along with Ron Paul. Even Colorado is tightening, with Romney now holding a 10 point lead over Santorum, who is in second, with Gingrich lagging back in third place.

I believe today could be a very significant moment in the GOP Nomination race. If Santorum wins two out of three contests, and Newt Gingrich finishes third or worse in all three, Santorum could be catapulted to a new level of support across the country. Today could be the day that conservatives decide to galvanize their support around Santorum to stop a Mitt Romney nomination. I actually think there is an outside chance Santorum will win all three contests today, or at least finish a very close second to Romney in Colorado. If so, it will be a very bad day for Romney and Gingrich, and a huge day for Rick Santorum.

Right now, it appears Ron Paul could finish last in the caucus states of Colorado and Minnesota. If so, it would be a huge blow to his campaign. The caucuses are where Paul has typically been thought to be the strongest. If he cannot win there, where can he win?
