Here is video of an interview Sen. Marco Rubio did with Bill O’Reilly last night where he talked about the problem of illegal immigration. Rubio said we need more “skill-based” immigration, and said there needs to be a crackdown on illegals who overstay their visas and employers who hire illegals.
As far as what to do with the 12 million or more illegals who are already in the country, Rubio outlined the following:
1. Illegals here who have committed a crime (other than being here illegally) must be deported.
2. All other illegals should be able to apply for legal status that allows them to remain and work. But they would not be eligible for Social Security or other Government programs. During this “phase,” the border must be secured and workplace verification must be put in place.
3. “After a significant period of time” passes, illegals here with legal status, who have not violated the terms of that status, may apply for a Green Card. If approved, they must wait at least five years to apply for citizenship.
4. On both the Green Card and then later the Citizenship application, people must go to the back of the line and wait their turn behind people who have applied without coming to the U.S. illegally.
While some would call this a “Pathway to Citizenship,” it is a very long process indeed that does not allow those here illegally to jump ahead of people in the citizenship process who have not violated the law.
Rubio offered to come on O’Reilly’s show with President Obama to discuss how to responsibly address the Immigration issue. O’Reilly said he would give them the entire hour!
